OOTD: DIY'd Tribal Shorts

crop sweater - forever 21 | cardigan - american eagle outfitters | shorts - diy, goodwill | combat boots - madden girl | glasses - coastal.com | necklace - forever 21
I actually wore this outfit a few weeks ago when we had a couple of warm days, but I never got around to uploading it until now. My favorite part of this outfit is definitely my shorts!

These were originally jeans from Goodwill. Using some scissors, a razor to fray the edges, and Tulip fabric paint, I turned them into tribal shorts! The project took about 2-3 hours and only cost me $4. Needless to say, I don't plan on buying shorts for more than $5 in the near future!

My inspiration came from these shorts from Pacsun. I saw them in stores and knew I needed them, but then I looked at the price tag... $40? "Uh, no thanks. I bet I could make those!" So I did some research on Pinterest (as usual) and emerged victorious!

I really like the look of the half-printed shorts! via Pinterest

This summer, I want to make American flag shorts and maybe try dip dying or ombre. We'll see! I also want to write a tutorial next time I DIY clothes from Goodwill.

Have you ever done a DIY like this?

  1. Those look so cute! It is kind of crazy how expensive clothes are getting, it's much easier to make some things yourself :) I love your boots too!

    1. Thanks, Ashley! I agree; it's just really, really sad when I see a pair of shorts for over $50, haha. And even if it's not an exact replica, it's still cool to be able to say, "yeah, I made this!" when someone asks where you bought something :)

    1. Thanks Marlen! It was just a litttttle too chilly for just shorts, haha. Not that tights actually offer any warmth, but I tried!

  5. I love this look!! I really like how creative you got with your shorts & the grey shorts are reallllly fab. I definitely want me a pair of those.

Honestly, don't post it on Tumblr any time soon with a tag of "tribal" or "native" because they will eat you alive. They as in the cultural appropriation nazis. Yes, I just ironically called them nazis because they will start tearing you down like you're some sort of ignorant racist & then fling their mud at you...& then of course, are totally disgusted with YOUR attitude because you won't read the articles they sent you. Yes, because everyone wants to read about cultural appropriation from some asshat that decided to just drag you through the dirt, call you names, harass you, & then try to educate you. SORRY, it didn't happen to me, but it drives me insane that there are these crusaders out there that think they're sooooooo self-righteous & doing the world a favor. You can't expect people to understand where you're coming from if you're going to be a complete douchebag by insulting someone. I don't know where these people get off....

Anywayyyyyyy, I'd love to see a DIY one day!! :D

    1. Hehe thanks girl! I spent a longgg time on them - I was with some friends when I started it, and by the time they were finished with whatever they were crafting, I was only about 25% done with the shorts...and they told me I'd never finish. WELL I DID.

Yeah, I guess I'm not politically correct describing them as tribal, but hey, I'd rather go with tribal than "triangles and squares and shapes that form a somewhat repetitive pattern". I'd definitely get eaten alive on Tumblr haha. Sometimes Tumblr just takes things a little too far....there's never an in between, it's ridiculous. But hey, I just reblog gifs and funny text posts. You won't see me crusading for social justice on Tumblr :p

    1. Thanks, Melissa! This was my first time doing a DIY like this, but it was definitely worth it. As long as you take your time, it'll look great! And if it goes wrong you can always paint over it :)
